WHAT IS COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY?

Automated Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine used for skin treatments and hair regeneration. Typical CIT procedures involve the use of tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Relying on plasma extracted from your blood, CIT can be used to improve skin elasticity and softness as well as promote hair growth and thickness when used for hair loss therapy. Both skin and hair procedures are done using your own plasma, meaning they don’t carry any risk of allergic reactions.

What Can We Treat With Microneedling With Collagen Induction Therapy?

Acne Scarring

CIT stimulates collagen production in damaged areas which helps reduce the appearance of acne scars. This process promotes smoother skin by breaking down scar tissue and replacing it with new, healthy tissue. It’s effective for various types of acne scars, including rolling and boxcar scars and can be customized based on the severity and depth of your scarring.

Loose Skin

Collagen and elastin are what retain skin firmness and elasticity. As microneedling encourages your skin to produce more of these proteins, you may notice tighter, more youthful-looking skin. This treatment can target areas like the jawline and neck, and even the delicate areas around the eyes.

Wrinkles

Microneedling benefits patients by addressing fine lines and wrinkles caused by aging or sun damage. Additional collagen and elastin give your skin the support it needs to be smoother and less lined. This process can be especially beneficial for smaller lines around the mouth, eyes, and forehead.

Hair Loss

CIT is also used for hair restoration, particularly for patients with thinning hair or early-stage hair loss. Microchannels enhance the absorption of growth-stimulating products such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or serums. Microneedling also promotes blood flow and stimulates dormant hair follicles for thicker, healthier hair growth.

Hyperpigmentation

While microneedling doesn’t directly target melanin like a laser or IPL treatment might, it does accelerate your skin’s natural regeneration process. Collagen induction therapy can offer the additional benefit of resolving areas of discoloration caused by sun damage, melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The shedding of old, damaged skin cells and the encouragement of new ones leads to a brighter and more uniform complexion.

What Microneedling Device Do We Use?

We offer treatments with the Rejuvapen NXT®, a precision microneedling device known for its ability to create controlled micro-channels in the skin to stimulate collagen production. For patients seeking enhanced results, we also use the Potenza® RF device, which combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to tighten skin, target deeper layers, and promote even more dramatic improvements in texture and elasticity.

What Is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is derived from your own blood and contains a high concentration of growth factors and healing proteins. After a small blood draw, we process it in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets. The resulting PRP is applied to your skin during microneedling or injected directly into targeted areas to encourage natural regeneration and repair.

How Does PRP Benefit the Skin?

PRP accelerates the body’s healing process, boosting collagen and elastin production, and improving overall skin health. When used with microneedling, it enhances the skin’s ability to repair itself, reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars more effectively. PRP also promotes a brighter complexion and improved skin texture by encouraging cell turnover and hydration.

TREATMENT TYPES AND PROCEDURES

Collagen Induction Therapy for Skin

Laser Aesthetics’s CIT treatment is minimally invasive and optimized for skin improvement and vigor. For this treatment, blood is extracted and centrifuged for 10 minutes to separate PRP from poor plasma. After the separation, the healthy PRP is then applied via a specialized pen to your skin. The procedure may cause mild discomfort, but is generally tolerable. After the treatment, you will see changes to your skin firmness in 3 to 4 weeks. Your skin will be more radiant and will feel tighter. Two to 3 treatments every 6 to 8 weeks are recommended for best results.

Collagen Induction Therapy for Hair

Similarly to the skin treatment, we will begin by extracting blood and separating the PRP. Afterward, the PRP will be applied to thinning regions on the head. Typically, three or four treatments spaced four to six weeks apart are recommended for best results.

Preparing for Your Treatment

Avoid using products with active ingredients like retinol, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid for at least 48 hours before your microneedling facial to minimize skin sensitivity. Stay out of direct sun exposure and avoid tanning for a week leading up to the treatment. If you’re prone to cold sores, we may recommend starting an antiviral medication before your session to prevent an outbreak. On the day of your treatment, come with clean skin and wear comfortable clothing to help you relax.

How to Care for Your Skin After CIT

Keep your skin clean and avoid applying makeup for the first 24-48 hours. Choose a gentle cleanser and a hydrating moisturizer to support the healing process and keep your skin calm. Your skin will be more sensitive than usual, so we recommend staying out of direct sunlight and wearing sunscreen every day, even after your skin heals. It is normal to have some redness or skin sensitivity for a couple of days, but this should fade quickly.

FAQs About Collagen Induction Therapy

Everyone is different, so Collagen Induction Therapy results may vary. Skin treatments will present immediate improvements in radiance and texture. Optimal skin rejuvenation will be visible roughly 6 months after treatment.

This treatment is suitable for individuals with various skin types and tones who want to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, minimize scars, or address hyperpigmentation. It’s ideal for patients in good overall health who are looking for a natural way to stimulate skin rejuvenation. Patients with active skin infections, open wounds, active acne, or certain medical conditions may need to wait before undergoing treatment.

There can be some discomfort with microneedling, but most patients tolerate this well. We apply a topical numbing cream before the session to minimize discomfort. You may feel a scratching or prickling feeling, like light sandpaper on the skin. For patients choosing radiofrequency microneedling, there may be warmth on the skin during the session.

Temporary redness, mild swelling, and a feeling of tightness are common after collagen induction therapy and usually subside within 24-48 hours. Some patients may notice minor pinpoint bleeding, peeling, or tiny scabs. The use of PRP can help minimize irritation from the treatment and make this healing process faster.

The cost of microneedle treatments depends on the size of the treatment area and the number of sessions needed to achieve your goals. We will let you know how much your treatment will cost with a personalized quote at the time of your consultation.
