Age Spots/Brown Spot Treatment in Cape Cod, MA

IPL Treatments for Age Spots and Brown Spots

Age spots, brown spots, and sun damage can take away from your look. Limiting sun exposure can certainly help us reduce skin damage, but staying inside all day is simply not reasonable. Cape Cod’s wonderful beaches are ours to enjoy, so why miss out? Age spots are even harder to deal with because they tend to occur naturally over time. Thankfully, Laser Aesthetics is here to offer a range of treatment options for getting rid of hyperpigmentation marks for good.

WHAT IS HYPERPIGMENTATION?

Hyperpigmentation is a common and harmless issue usually experienced by those over 30. These unpleasant spots form when the production of melanin is accelerated through ultraviolet (UV) exposure and the natural aging process. Hyperpigmentation can also sometimes be caused when acne-prone skin heals with a darker color than the surrounding skin. The appearance of age spots, melasma, discoloration, and sun damage on the face can have a negative impact on one’s self-esteem. While we can’t control the appearance of age and brown spots, we can now effectively treat both.

IPL by Cutera Limelight: the Best Hyperpigmentation Treatment

IPL by Cutera Limelight is the latest and greatest way to remove age spots from your body. Requiring no anesthetic, this treatment can be used to remove spots from the face, arms, legs, hands — pretty much anywhere on the body! The device works by delivering powerful light energy directly to treatment areas. By heating the pigmented cells, IPL delivers optimal skin care results with minimal downtime.

What Is IPL?

IPL is short for Intense Pulsed Light. The device uses multiple different colors and wavelengths of light that can target dark spots and hyperpigmentation in the skin. When the light is applied to your skin, it will turn into heat energy and target the dark spots. Through this technology, we are able to destroy dark spots without damaging any of the surrounding skin.

The device scatters light over the skin and can target different pigments depending on the settings that we use for the treatment. The scattering of the light also means that larger areas can be treated at one time.

What Makes IPL by Cutera Limelight Different?

We use Cutera Limelight because it is one of the best hyperpigmentation treatments on the market. It is highly customizable and can be used for many different applications. IPL by Cutera Limelight stands out from other platforms for several reasons:

It Can Be Used Nearly Everywhere

Limelight can be used in many different areas of the body including the face, neck, chest, hands, and more. Larger areas can be treated with Limelight due to the multiple wavelengths that are spread out across the skin. It can also target more than one condition at a time.

It Is Customizable Based on Skin Type

Traditionally, IPL treatments have only been used for individuals with lighter skin tones. However, because Limelight is so customizable, it can be used for people of all skin types and colors. A longer wavelength setting can be used for those with darker skin. You should always set up a consultation to see if Cutera Limelight is suitable for your situation and skin type.

It Offers Uniform Results

The technology within the Cutera Limelight IPL devices allows for uniform results. Because it is targeting certain colors within your skin, it will even out your overall skin color while removing sun damage.

What Are IPL Treatments Like?

Before Your Treatment

It’s important to be prepared for your IPL treatment. After your consultation with us, we’ll give you a few instructions for the days leading up to your treatment. We will ask that you refrain from waxing your skin or using any depilatory creams for seven days before your treatment. You should also stay away from any harsh skincare products during this same time frame. On the day of your appointment, make sure not to wear any makeup.

During Your Treatment

During treatments, we will protect your eyes from the IPL by having you put on special glasses. We will then apply a lubricating gel to the skin to allow for easier treatment and to help cool the surface of the skin. Next, we will begin the treatment.

Each time the light is pulsed on your skin, you will feel a sensation that is similar to snapping a rubber band on your skin. While this can be mildly painful, most people do not need any anesthetic. You can request a topical numbing cream if you feel like it is needed.

After Your Treatment

Following treatment, some redness may occur, typically subsiding in a couple of hours. Treated spots may also appear darker than before at first. This is simply the melanin rising to the surface after being heated and destroyed. In 1 to 3 weeks’ time, the darkened spots will gradually fade and flake off, resulting in a clean and clear complexion. These darker spots and the flaking effect are both easily covered by makeup, which can be applied again the day after your treatment.

To care for your skin after treatment, you can plan on continuing to stay away from waxing or harsh skincare products for a week post-treatment. You will also want to avoid too much sun exposure or tanning beds. Once you notice the brown spots flaking off, be sure to refrain from trying to pick them off by yourself. They will fall off naturally when they are ready.

How Many Treatments Will Be Needed?

Everyone’s course of treatment will be different based on how much hyperpigmentation is present and what the patient’s goals for treatment are. Some people may see the results they are looking for after one or two sessions. Some people may need up to six to treat age spots and get the smooth and even skin that they want. We will reevaluate several weeks after each appointment to decide on further treatment. To give each treatment long enough to become effective, we recommend waiting four weeks between hyperpigmentation treatment sessions.

Will You Need Maintenance Treatments?

If you are having sunspots treated, there is a possibility that they may return over time. This is simply due to reexposure to the sun. To help prevent sun spots, make sure to wear good sunscreen any time you spend time in the sun. If dark spots do reappear, you can set up another treatment to have them removed.

Can IPL Be Used to Treat Skin Redness?

Since different wavelengths can be used to target different colors on the skin, IPL Cutera Limelight can also be used to target redness in the skin, sometimes called rosacea. This type of treatment specifically targets brown and red coloration. The technology can also be used to help treat vascular lesions or spider veins in the face.
