A few months after your dermal filler appointment, you catch your reflection in the mirror and pause. Is your filler fading already, or is your mind playing tricks on you?
A hyaluronic acid filler treatment may last longer or shorter than you expected. A variety of factors contribute to the longevity of fillers, some of which are within your control and some of which are not.
At Laser Aesthetics of Cape Cod, we believe the most beautiful results come from a plan built around you, and the most satisfying experience starts with patient education. Let’s talk about what affects the longevity of filler and what you can do to maintain your dermal filler results.
How Long Do Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers Last?
Most hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers last six to 18 months or longer. At Laser Aesthetics, we offer fillers from the JUVÉDERM® and RHA® lines. On average, their longevity breaks down like this:
JUVÉDERM®
- Juvéderm Voluma XC: up to two years
- Juvéderm Vollure XC: up to 18 months
- Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC: up to one year
- Juvéderm Volbella XC: up to one year
- Juvéderm Ultra XC: up to one year
- Juvéderm Volux XC: up to one year
RHA®
- RHA Redensity: up to one year
- RHA 2 and RHA 3: up to 15 months
- RHA 4: up to 15 months
What Happens to Filler After It Is Injected?
Once injected, a hyaluronic acid filler doesn’t last forever. Your body breaks it down gradually through naturally occurring enzymes called hyaluronidases, along with the normal turnover of the surrounding tissue.
Your metabolism and activity level, the formulation of your filler and the technique used to place it all influence how quickly the product breaks down. Filler tends to break down in the lips and other high-movement areas sooner, while areas with less movement or deeper placement of the filler often retain the results longer.
Could Cape Cod Living Affect Your Filler Results?
Salt air, long days on the water and bright summer afternoons are part of what makes life on the Cape so special. But all of that time outdoors adds up, and your skin keeps track of every hour.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UV light is the leading cause of skin aging. UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis, damage collagen fibers and trigger enzymes that rebuild that collagen incorrectly. That process weakens the structural support your filler relies on to look smooth and natural, which can make volume loss noticeable sooner than you anticipated.
Daily sunscreen use is your simplest line of defense. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher for everyday use and SPF 50 or higher for extended time outdoors. A wide-brimmed hat and quality sunglasses add another layer of protection.
Which Daily Habits Can Affect Your Filler Results?
Sun exposure is not the only influence on how your filler ages. Several everyday habits can affect how long your results last:
- Dehydration: Hyaluronic acid is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls in and holds onto water to keep your skin plump. When you are dehydrated, your filler has less moisture to work with and can look flatter and less defined than it should.
- Alcohol: Alcohol may work against you because it has a dehydrating effect. Frequent drinking can deprive your tissues of the water your filler needs to work at its best. Alcohol can also increase bruising and swelling in the days after an injection appointment.
- Smoking: Tobacco restricts blood flow and accelerates collagen breakdown, weakening the tissue that supports your results and deepening the very lines filler is meant to soften.
- Excessive heat exposure: Saunas, hot yoga and long hot showers increase blood flow to the treated area, which can accelerate the rate at which filler breaks down.
None of these habits will erase your filler overnight. Over the course of months, however, they can gradually chip away at the fresh, natural look you came to us for. The good news is that, unlike the pace at which your body metabolizes HA, these factors are largely within your control.
How Do You Build a Dermal Filler Maintenance Plan?
The most effective maintenance plans are proactive rather than reactive. Instead of waiting until you notice a change, partner with your provider on a strategy tailored to your unique needs.
Time your touch-ups to the treatment area.
Areas that move constantly, such as the lips and the skin around your mouth, typically need attention sooner than areas with less motion, like the cheeks.
Book before you notice a change, not after.
Booking a touch-up when your results first begin to soften, rather than after they have fully worn off, usually means we can apply less product to restore your results. Many of our patients find this approach keeps their appearance consistently fresh without an obvious change others might notice.
Revisit the product conversation at every visit.
HA fillers vary in density, flexibility and longevity. The right formulation for one area or goal may not be the right choice for another. Discussing your options and how you’ve liked your results at each appointment keeps your plan current as your goals and skin evolve.
How Often Should You Get a Filler Touch-Up?
Many patients benefit from a check-in every six to 12 months, although lip filler often needs attention sooner and deeper placements in the cheeks or jawline may last longer. The ideal interval depends on your product, treatment area, metabolism and lifestyle. Maintenance appointments allow your provider to assess your results and recommend the right treatment timing for you.
