What Causes the Skin to Age?

Aging skin occurs because of two different factors, extrinsic and intrinsic. Everyone has different genetics that can cause skin to age at different rates or to age in different ways. You may start to notice that you are getting your grandmother’s crow’s feet or your father’s worry lines. Other intrinsic factors such as hormonal changes can impact the skin and change its appearance.

Extrinsic factors can include how much unprotected sun exposure your skin has had, whether you have smoked, what your diet consists of, and even what products you use for your skin care routine. No one is perfect in the care of their skin, and many of these factors can impact the aging process.

Loss of collagen in the skin and sun damage can both cause wrinkles and fine lines on the surface of the skin. Loss of elasticity combined with a decrease in fat pads can also cause the face to lose its volume. PRP treatments offer solutions to many of these problems by stimulating healing in your skin.

What Is PRP?

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a substance that is filled with beneficial components such as platelets and growth factors. It is taken from your blood so it has many of the healing properties and functions of your blood but in an even more concentrated form.

PRP can only be obtained from your blood by putting it through a process called centrifugation. Blood is taken from your arm and put into a centrifuge machine that is designed to extract PRP from the blood. After spinning the blood, the straw-colored plasma and platelets rise to the top while red blood cells sink to the bottom. Once we spin the blood, we can place the plasma and platelets in a syringe or keep it to apply as a topical serum.

How Can PRP Help With Skin Rejuvenation?

When you receive an injury or an irritation on your skin, blood rushes to the area to begin healing it. During the healing process, your blood protects the area from infection, brings nutrients to the area, and even helps build new collagen. It can also enhance the proliferation or creation of new cells. While this process is happening in your body all the time, these benefits can be stimulated in a specific desired location by using PRP.

PRP Skin Rejuvenation Treatment Options

PRP Injections

One way that PRP can be used to help stimulate skin tightening, skin texture improvement, and other benefits is by injecting the PRP directly into the area that you want to treat. PRP injections, or PRP facials are one skin rejuvenation procedure that can be done to help your face look youthful and to improve elasticity and volume.

During a PRP facial, blood is taken from the patient’s arm, spun in a centrifuge, and then injected into specific areas of the face. It can be used to target wrinkles and lines, or to increase volume in the cheeks, temples, and other areas through the building up of collagen and elastin.

PRP With Microneedling

During our PRP with microneedling treatments, platelet-rich plasma is placed topically on the skin before or after a microneedling procedure. Even without the addition of PRP, microneedling itself is a powerful anti-aging solution that can induce skin texture improvement, resolve scarring, minimize lines and wrinkles, and improve the tone of the skin.

During a microneedling procedure, we use a device that contains tiny needles that pierce the skin at a specific depth. This causes microchannels in the skin which your body will begin to heal. As the microchannels heal, more collagen and elastin can be produced in the area and new skin cells can replace old skin cells.

By applying PRP taken from your body onto the skin before or after the skin rejuvenation procedure, we can help your skin to benefit even more from the treatment. PRP can help to soothe the skin which helps it to heal faster and have less redness and inflammation after the treatment. We use MicroPen® which is designed to push serums deep into the skin. This allows the benefits of PRP and other topical products to provide benefits beyond the epidermis. Combining microneedling with PRP can help increase the effectiveness of the treatment, maximize collagen and elastin production, and give you a soothing experience.
