What Platelets Do for Hair Follicles
Platelets are the cells that your body sends to repair injuries. Alongside clotting a wound, they release proteins that tell nearby cells to rebuild tissue and grow new blood vessels. When we concentrate platelets from a sample of your blood and place them near your thinning follicles, these same repair signals push weak follicles back into an active growing state while also improving blood flow to the scalp.
How Growth Factors Trigger New Growth
Growth factors are the messenger proteins released by platelets. They tell follicle stem cells to divide, lengthen the growth phase of the hair cycle and thicken the strands that are already there. The Difference Between PRP and PRF
PRP, platelet-rich plasma, is spun quickly and needs an anticoagulant to keep the blood from clotting. Before your first injections, we meet with you to look deeper into the cause of your thinning. Hair thinning and loss can be triggered by many different things, including genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), new medications, autoimmune disease, tight hairstyles, stress and more. Finding the cause of your hair loss is important for determining whether PRP/PRF are good treatment options. We also look at your overall health history and current lifestyle. Some patients will not be candidates for this treatment, including those with scalp infections, certain clotting conditions or medical conditions that require the use of blood thinners.
Inside the Blood Draw and Spin Process
How Much Blood Is Needed and Why
We only have to draw a small amount of blood from your arm, usually one or two vials, similar to a standard lab test. This is enough volume to get the platelets that we need, concentrated down into a treatment sample. The draw takes a minute or two and is no more painful than a traditional blood draw. You do not need to fast or prepare in any way beforehand.
What Happens Inside the Centrifuge
Once your blood is collected, we put the sample into a machine called a centrifuge that spins enough to separate the blood by weight. Heavier red blood cells sink to the bottom, while the lighter platelet-rich layer rises to the top. We draw off this golden-colored layer, which is the material we inject into your scalp.
What the Injections Feel Like
Once your sample is ready, we inject it across the thinning areas using a fine needle. We can apply a numbing cream first to help keep you comfortable. You will feel a series of quick pinches or pressure at each spot, depending on the sensitivity of each scalp location. The full injection process usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.
Common Sensations During and After Treatment
- Scalp Tightness: A taut or full feeling across the treated area is common right after injection and usually eases within a day.
- Mild Stinging: A brief sting can occur as each injection goes in, which is why we offer numbing cream to soften the sensation.
- Warmth or Tingling: A warm or tingling feeling afterward is due to the increased blood flow to the follicles.
- Pinpoint Bleeding and Redness: Tiny dots of blood and pink skin at the injection sites are expected and typically clear within a few hours.
- A Dull Headache: A mild headache can occur the first day from scalp tenderness.
Recovery Day by Day
There is no downtime that keeps you home. Most patients return to work the same day and follow a few simple steps to protect the scalp.
The First 24 Hours After Treatment
Expect your scalp to be sore with some mild swelling and tenderness at the injection sites. Skip vigorous exercise, sweating, saunas and hot tubs until the next day, since the heat and moisture can irritate the fresh sites. You should also avoid touching or scrubbing your scalp and stay away from the use of styling products.
Days Two Through Five
After a few days, your scalp will be less sore, and any redness will fade. You can wash your hair with a gentle shampoo, but we recommend continuing to avoid harsh products and heat styling for a few more days.
One Week and Beyond
By a week after treatment, patients can go back to their normal routine, including coloring and styling. On Cape Cod, we remind our patients to be sensible about sun, wind and salt exposure, since a treated scalp can be more sensitive to these exposures.
How Many Sessions Will You Need?
You will likely start with a series of treatments spaced about six weeks apart. This spacing follows the hair growth cycle and gives follicles time to respond. After your initial series, you can come back every six to twelve months to maintain your results. We set your exact schedule during your consultation based on your thinning and response.
When Will You See Your Results?
Because hair grows slowly, patience is part of the process. Many patients notice less shedding and early changes around one to two months, with fuller results developing roughly three to six months out.
